LC-3 is a very simplified assembly language. The fact that it only has 15 commands (or instructions) is both useful and problematic.
LC-3 is useful because it provides a good introduction to the ideas and concepts of a real assembly language. After you learn how to program in LC-3, you can go on to master real assembly langauges.
Its ease presents a problem, however. The fact that LC-3 is so limited means that many basic commands and functions simply cannot be included natively. Actions such as subtraction and multiplication require a little extra code.
